TDI Intro to Cave Diving, with Divemaster Timothy Brown

Aquatic Adventures Ohio Divemaster Timothy Brown had the itch, he wanted to dive in caves. This past October 2015 he went down to Central Florida with the Aquatic Adventures Dive Club and completed his TDI Cavern Course and was hooked. Though he liked diving in the Cavern zone, he wanted to see what was beyond and past the light zone. As a Cavern diver you are limited to diving within the light zone, and penetration is limited to the "rule of thirds", or 1/6th if you are using doubles to a maximum depth of 130 feet (TDI Cavern Course Details).

The drive down to Florida isn't that bad when you have a few people to share the driving with. We loaded up Tim's truck with tanks and dive gear and headed off for the thirteen hour drive to Cave Excursions in Live Oak, Florida. There we had rented a trailer for the four days we would be staying. The trip wasn't going to be long, just long enough for Tim to complete his Intro to Cave course and an extra day of fun diving.

It's always a good day when you pull into Cave Excursions!

The adventure begins! For anyone that has driven to Florida knows, Atlanta is your nemesis. You can plan the perfect drive but Atlanta traffic is the worst, and will destroy that well planned drive.

When we arrived in Florida, we got settled in to the trailer, did a quick gear check to make sure things made it down OK and headed to bed. In the morning we made the quick drive over to Wes Skiles Peacock Springs, which is just five minutes down the road. You gotta love the check in process, $4.00 per car, sign the clipboard, and leave your certification card on your dashboard. We met TDI Cave Instructor Rob McGann aka "Dive with Rob" at 8:00 am and Tim went through the paces of gear check and knowledge review with him.

Instructor Rob McGann doesn't let you slide by, he expects that you bring your A game. As anyone that has gone through this class knows, gas management is huge, and dissimilar tanks are not your friend. Rob McGann ensured that Tim knew how to do it all, and do it on the fly in the water. To add to it, his dive buddy was using Bar and he was using PSI. Gotta love those Brits! After going through the knowledge review, they hit the water for some fun times!

I think this is a required photo when you go to Peacock.

We "listened in" during his class, Rob has a way of explaining things that just make it easy to understand.

After two days of training Timothy Brown passed his TDI Intro to Cave course!!! Now it was on to a fun dive. The next day we were heading over to Madison Blue Springs to dive in a new system. None of us had ever been over there and had heard some awesome things about it.

Rob McGann took us on a dive in Madison, and that place is awesome!!!! I cannot wait to go back, we have plans to complete our Full Cave course in October, and we are going to do some dives at Madison. If you are interested in doing a Cavern course, Intro to Cave or Full Cave course let me know. We are heading back down in October and have a house rented, you are more than welcome to come! Just send me an email at lstiverson@aaoscuba.com if you are interested, and I can cover the details with you. Check out the video below, its just a short clip of some of the diving that we did.
